A gift of 500,000 Hungarian forints from the state to anyone who leaves their car aside for a while

The title is somewhat misleading, the amount has been converted into our country's currency. To give a better impression of the size of the gift bonus. Writing the “size” of the amount does not seem accurate, because it is more about the “smallness” of the amount – at least at first glance, the state allocation does not seem so large compared to what is required of citizens.

Well, what's the deal? Who, where and on what terms will get the 1250 euros?

We are in Germany, in the state of Hesse, in the city of Marburg. In this city of 77 thousand inhabitants, the municipality has decided to offer a reward of 1250 euros to anyone who decides to get rid of his car for a whole year.

Giving up your own car for 12 months means a serious change in your lifestyle. In comparison, 1,250 euros doesn’t seem like much. Even in local terms, it’s not a very big amount, and in Germany it’s almost nothing. What’s more, the bonus isn’t given in cash, but in the form of a voucher that can be used for car sharing and public transport, all services that would allow a citizen to cover up the lack of use of their car for a year. The bonus can also be used in shops and restaurants in Marburg to help local businesses.

“In cities with good mobility, a third of car owners say they hardly need their own car. The goal is for people to be able to experience transportation without their own car. Especially for those living in the city center, car sharing will hardly change their routine, except that the car is not right at the front door, so it must be booked in advance of the trip,” explained Michael Kobats, head of the city center’s urban planning and mobility department.

According to a survey, people born after the millennium will be more likely to give up driving their own cars in favor of public transport, but the majority feel this will undoubtedly be a radical change.
