According to weather reports, the severe winter storm moved across the northeastern states of the country, accompanied by winds and snow.
New York City was also covered in snow on Tuesday, with a layer of snow approaching ten centimeters in thickness in Central Park.For more than two years, there has not been an example of more than five centimeters of snow falling in the big city in one day.
In parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Connecticut, more than a foot of snow fell. In the city of Hartford, Connecticut, the temperature approached forty centimeters.
In Pennsylvania, snowfall also killed one person. A 20-year-old man died Tuesday morning when he struck a fallen power line while clearing snow.
130,000 customers were without power across the state on Tuesday, and another 12,000 households in western New Jersey were without service. According to the New Jersey State Police, about 250 car accidents occurred during the snowfall.
Due to the winter storm, a total of about two thousand flights were cancelled, most of them at airports serving New York City and at Boston International Airport.
In the northeastern part of the United States, winter storms and fast-moving weather fronts with heavy precipitation arriving in the region from the Great Lakes are common.
