Malaria is a disease with usually flu-like symptoms — fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, fatigue — caused by parasites spread by certain female mosquitoes (Anopheles mosquitoes). Other symptoms include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, but it can also cause life-threatening damage, such as kidney failure, stroke, or coma.
A medical emergency has now been declared in America, as five people are reported to have contracted malaria. Authorities in Florida have issued an alert about the mosquito-borne disease, advising residents to drain water from their pools, check that their windows are closed properly, and use mosquito repellent and bed nets.
Similarly, a warning was issued in Texas: they drew doctors’ attention to the fact that patients with suspicious symptoms should be asked where they have been, and whether they have traveled to an area (mainly Africa) where they could have contracted malaria.
