US cruise company Royal Caribbean is opening a new private island on the Caribbean coast of Mexico, near Mahahual. The new resort is scheduled to open in 2027 under the name Perfect Day Mexico, and includes sandy beaches, a water park, restaurants and bars.

According to Jason Liberty, CEO of Royal Caribbean Group, the project aims to increase the attractiveness of the Western Caribbean region, and the development is being carried out in cooperation with the state of Quintana Roo, and gives priority to sustainability and supporting local communities.

This will be the company's second private island, following CocoCay Island in the Bahamas, which, according to the company's marketing director, is the “number one top-rated destination” among more than 250 cruise destinations. USA Today reports.

The travel holding company is the owner of the world's largest cruise ship, the 20-deck Icon of the Seas, which set sail for the first time in January this year from Miami, Florida. The ship, registered in the Bahamas, is 365 meters long and can accommodate 7,600 passengers. The ship cost $2 billion to build and features more than 40 restaurants, bars and lounges, as well as seven pools and six water slides.

Royal Caribbean is also listed on the New York Stock Exchange, and although its shares fell along with other similar companies during the coronavirus pandemic, demand for its services has now recovered.
