The US Coast Guard is monitoring a Russian ship near the Hawaiian Islands, and the authority assumes the ship is being used for intelligence – CBS News reports. Issued by the Coast Guard In a press release It states that while international law allows foreign military vessels to pass through the United States’ exclusive economic zone (which delineates the parts of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans where the United States controls natural resources), these “military vessels operating under a foreign flag” are relatively often waiting times in the relevant region.
The area is part of Coast Guard District 14, which covers more than 14 million square miles of land and sea. The agency published a short surveillance video showing the Russian ship passing off the coast of Hawaii.
“The US Coast Guard is currently monitoring a Russian vessel operating near Hawaii,” said Commander Dave Milne, the agency’s chief of foreign affairs. It is not yet known for certain if the military ship is actually circling the area for espionage or for some other reason, in any case, the US Coast Guard is monitoring its activities.
The ship is currently in international waters, and the Americans have not noticed any suspicious activity.
