A special weather phenomenon helped the Ukrainians

In April 2022, many were surprised when Ukrainian forces sank the warship Moscow.

In April 2022, Ukrainian forces were able to sink the ship “Moscow”, the flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. The loss of the cruiser was surprising not only to Russia, but also to many outside observers.

a new one Stady According to the report, a special weather event helped the Ukrainians destroy the ship IFLScience. The analysis was conducted by radar experts from the Swedish Defense Research Agency and the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute.

The researchers concluded that the Ukrainian military was only able to notice and target Moscow because of the temperature inversion.

Under these conditions, when the air at higher altitudes is warmer than near the Earth’s surface, Ukrainian radar signals are refracted in the atmosphere and transmitted much farther, making targeting possible.

When the missile struck, the ship was beyond the normal horizon of ground-based radar systems, so some previously thought a US aircraft may have transmitted the data. This theory has since been debunked. Ukrainska Pravda suggested as early as December 2022 that weather conditions may have played a role in Ukraine’s success.

For nearly a century, researchers have been studying how changes in the atmosphere can affect radar waves. Models used to determine the radar horizon assume normal atmospheric conditions, but the atmosphere can be highly variable.

Based on the new findings, it is worth seriously considering the current state of the atmosphere in the army, because it can significantly affect the operation of radar equipment.
