When we say robotics, most people think of it as a distinctly modern science, where they try to create robots that are sometimes practical, sometimes less practical, with the help of the latest mathematical and engineering-physical knowledge: teams. Such as Boston Dynamics, for example, already exist Countless videos have been posted And about their ongoing developments

The results were really impressive, but the fact that this happened about 1,000 years ago is not well known In the Arabian desert A robot troupe, robotic waiters, automatic doors and peacock-shaped fountains were part of the landscape. The information seems unbelievable, but it is documented and true to a large extent: the most prominent person we should mention from the era is Ismail Al-Jazari.

Ismail al-Jazari lived from 1136 to 1206 in the city of al-Jazari in Mesopotamia, and was a member of the ruling Artuqid family. We know more about the work from one of his existing books, The Book of Mechanical Knowledge (original title: A Book on the Knowledge of Engineering Tricks, in Latin letters: A Book on the Knowledge of Engineering Tricks). The scientist, inventor and former Muslim scientist is rightly considered the father of robotics, because in his book we can read descriptions of inventions that make us imagine ourselves in medieval science fiction.
The book contains only descriptions of objects built by Ishmael himself. Much of the book does not consist of specific inventions, but of various small parts that make up the components of the inventions: it contains descriptions of various shafts, lifting systems, gears, speed control devices, and various mechanical control panels.
Just reading the principles used is shocking, but the various things that have been invented in this way are even more surprising: Nowadays, the whole world is amazed when a restaurant with robot waiters is introduced in Japan – but in the 12th century in the Arabian Peninsula there were already beings In the form of humanoid “automata capable of serving tea and water”, just like a floating automated orchestra designed to impress the nobility, the music being played could easily be changed by adjusting different levers.
Since the area in which he lived was a desert, various water-lifting structures were also given a special place in the book: it includes, for example, a description of a hand-washing and cleaning device with a flushing mechanism similar to modern toilets, with a human-shaped robot, as well as a fountain in the form of Peacock too.
Ismail Al-Jazari's studies have been collected on many sites on the Internet, and they are as stunning to today's eyes as they were then. It is nice to study the work of the “Father of Robotics” carefully.
