The fan design isn’t perfect (it really needs to be improved), but in any case, it brings one of the console-designed games that played a role in creating the Sony PlayStation to a more mainstream platform.
Here’s a quick explanation: In 1989, Ken Kutaragi created a sound chip for the Super Famicom (SNES) while working at Sony. SPC700 was built in secret, but Kutaragi failed. Sony management was furious, but CEO Oga Norio let him finish the job. Video games were considered a passing fad within the company, but Kutaragi was able to convince Ohga to let Sony create a CD-ROM add-on for the Super Famicom. This led to the creation of the Nintendo Play Station, but ended up striking a deal with Philips. Sony created the PS1 out of revenge, and Philips somehow managed to license Mario and The Legend of Zelda for their CD console…
One such game was Zelda’s Adventure, which was ported to the Game Boy. We’ve seen fan crashes many times (Bloodborne, Elden Ring, Resident Evil 4 Remake, Dead Space Remake…). Here, however, the top-down adventure remained (it was followed by the first Legend of Zelda; the other two were based on a CD-ROM style sideshow for the sequel). The demake is made by an indie developer called John Lay. The Irishman followed his original example, and we control Zelda instead of Link (because Ganon kidnapped our hero).
According to Lai, the concept of Zelda Adventure was so interesting that he thought it would be fun on a mobile platform. He carried over the visual style of Link’s Awakening and features the Zelda Oracle games for the demake, which he created at GB Studio. In the video embedded below, we can see the original CD-i and the GB copy side by side. It doesn’t take a lot of loading time, and it can be played from a browser, so you don’t have to download it if you don’t want to (or if you’re trying it on someone else’s device).
demac here We can find it. If Link’s Awakening is around, it’s also worth a try.
