Ted Sarandos tried to explain why they made the final decision.
Although the press has been swirling in the past year about the decisions of the new management of Warner Bros. Discovery and the projects that were canceled as a result, as well as the contents of HBO Max, but let’s not forget 15 years on Netflix Nor about his scythe, because last year They showed the door to many products.
Among them were, for example, the Space Division and Resident Evil – even the fact that the former featured famous faces like Steve Carell, John Malkovich, and Lisa Kudrow, and the latter belonged to a franchise as big as the undead, couldn’t save them.
As much as it seems to fans of certain content that these decisions happen at random, this is not the case. This was revealed by Ted Sarandos, co-CEO of Netflix bloombergWhen he responded to the criticism leveled at them for canceling a show after just one season or prematurely ending a fan favorite. Subscribers do not hesitate to launch social campaigns to save their beloved series, but according to Sarandos they do so for good reason:
“We’ve never had a hit show. A lot of those shows were well-intentioned, but they went to very small audiences with very big budgets. The key is you have to be able to talk to small audiences on a small budget and to big audiences with a big budget. If you can do it really well… Right, you can do that forever.”
Netflix usually looks at the total number of hours watched for a series, and doesn’t select shows based on critical reception. This is compared to things like how much it cost to make and how well it appeared on the streaming platform’s top 10 charts. This is why Stranger Things, The Crown, and The Butters are still playing, and 1899, for example, does not continue.
