The Ferrari team boss estimated that Mercedes’ fault from six to seventeen is the same as last year’s Scuderia. On the other hand, Christian Horner draws attention to how easy it is to catch the points race.
Mercedes finally fixed the W13 problems and tried to catch up with Barcelona’s improvements – one of the main stories of the Spanish Grand Prix after George Russell drove the race for a while and Lewis Hamilton catching up after his early puncture. Toto Wolff, who said Mercedes was the fastest car on Sunday, poured oil on the fire and even hopes of the championship returned. However, Mattia Binotto will not make hasty statements:
“Congratulations to them for catching up and improving their car’s pace. They are seven tenths of a second behind in the trial time, and on a shorter track,” the Ferrari team boss said in a statement to Sky. “They were 30 seconds or more behind Red Bull in the race, 40 seconds would have been a disadvantage compared to Charles. 40 seconds, 66 laps, which is also six to seven tenths of a lap. This is still a huge handicap, similar to Ferrari’s delay last year.”
Contrary to Binotto’s calculations, they rely more on precedent from Red Bull: Christian Horner states that Max Verstappen brought a huge points gap and turned it into an advantage in three rounds.
“Things can turn quickly. After Australia, I think we came home with a 40-point lead, and then a few points, six points ahead of Monaco,” Autosport Horner reported. “It shows how fast things can change in Formula One. So, I’m not going to describe Mercedes in terms of the number of points available. We know Ferrari has a very fast car, which shows how fast things can turn.”
Horner referred to the single-point race, but there was a similar protection change in the designer. Currently, Red Bull leads the pool with 195 points, Ferrari has 169 units and third Mercedes has 120 points.
