After Biden's withdrawal, 'overwhelming majority' of Democratic leaders back Kamala Harris

The Association of Democratic State Committees (ASDC) said an “overwhelming majority” of the 57 state Democratic Party leaders voted to replace Joe Biden with Kamala Harris as the presidential nominee.

“I am proud that state party chairs, vice chairmen, and executives across the country are overwhelmingly united behind Vice President Kamala Harris,” said the organization’s president, Ken Martin, in a statement released on the X website.

“These state party leaders at every level are on the front lines of winning elections, and they know the stakes in this election couldn’t be higher,” he added, calling Harris the best person to “impeach Donald Trump.”

The ASDC is responsible for representing state-level Democratic parties and member organizations to the Democratic National Committee—the party's governing body that oversees the presidential nominating process.

US President Joe Biden announced on Sunday in a statement published by the X website that he will withdraw from the candidacy and will not run in the presidential election scheduled for November 5. He wrote in it that it would be better to serve the interests of the Democratic Party and the United States if he stepped down. After that, he wants to focus solely on performing his duties as president for the rest of his time.

Biden also indicated that he supports his running mate, Kamala Harris, but that does not automatically mean who will be the Democratic presidential nominee.

Joe Biden received Vice President Kamala Harris' endorsement about half an hour after she announced her withdrawal and has already started sending out fundraising emails.

ActBlue, which manages public donations for Democratic candidates, said supporters have raised $46.7 million so far.

Big-name Democrats are backing Kamala Harris for president, including California Gov. Gavin Newsom — who has been touted in recent weeks as a potential successor to Biden.

With Biden’s withdrawal, Donald Trump, 78, becomes the oldest candidate in presidential election history. Some of Trump’s strongest supporters, including Marjorie Taylor Greene and Greg Abbott, say Trump could easily defeat Harris in November.
