All America, who laughed at the Hungarians, called us bloody obscenities

We have already seen in an American TV series that a character accidentally hurt Hungarians, but there have also been examples abroad where they deliberately insulted us with annoying swear words. In one episode of Hotel of Hearts, we saw that the hotel manager wanted to be nice to the Hungarian guests, but unfortunately something completely different happened, but in a series around the turn of the millennium, he deliberately became the subject of ridicule.

That ’70s Show started on August 23, 1998 on FOX and ran until 2006. In Hungary, HBO Comedy aired it only later, from January 4, 2010. Actors such as Topher Grace, Laura Prepon, Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis played in this series.

In the first episode of Season 5, a bearded Red Foreman (Kurtwood Smith) tells Stephen Hyde (Danny Masterson) that:

“Shut it up. And go shave that thing! You look like a fucking Hungarian.”

In Hungarian, this means:

“Shut up, then go cut that thing off! You look like a sleazy Hungarian!”

It is not known why this was included in the series, what was the problem with growing a beard, and why the actor immediately thought “sleazy Hungarian” about him, in any case, the Americans fell laughing when they heard this the first time.

Perhaps it is because they included this joke because of the Hungarians during the Reformation, although in the dubbed version it is translated as

“You look like an old Hungarian.”

Speaking of Mila Kunis, the actress speaks Hungarian in one of her films – more precisely, in our language, she was lucky at the Vienna train station. The movie star had trouble pronouncing the name of one of our country’s settlements while browsing the stream. You can read about the exact movie and settlement in the following article:
