Federal captain Gregg Berhalter, who managed the team from 2018 to 2022, left the bench for the U.S. national team in July after they were eliminated in the group stage of the Copa America. The MLS then reached out to Mauricio Pochettino, who has enjoyed great success at club level despite never having coached a national team: In England, he led Southampton to eighth in the Premier League in 2013, led Tottenham to the Champions League final in 2019 and reached the League Cup final with Chelsea. Between managing the two London clubs, Mauricio Pochettino sat on the bench at Paris Saint-Germain, winning the league, the Coupe de France and the French Super Cup with the Parisians. The 52-year-old Argentine coach was in charge of Chelsea until last May, when he was forced to leave the Blues after a disappointing sixth-place finish.
Mauricio Pochettino is the new captain of the US national team
Pochettino's appointment was largely determined by U.S. sporting director Matt Crocker, who worked with Pochettino at Southampton in 2013. During the search for a coach, Crocker revealed that the U.S. would not be a primary consideration in the selection.
“We have to be able to compete on salary to get a coach of the level that can take the project forward and get the results we want on the pitch. It is a priority. It is something we are prepared to invest in,” Crocker said earlier.
