Alps Canada | News | Canadian Alps Statement on the 2024 Federal Budget

April 17, 2024 – Alpine Canada Alpin (ACA) welcomes yesterday's announcement of new federal funding for Canadian athletes allocated in Budget 2024. This vital increase is a positive step forward, helping athletes better manage significant training costs, while recognizing the contributions of athletes at home and abroad. Sports system.

The ACA recognizes short-term, two-year federal government investments of $16 million for the Sports Support Program, $10.6 million for the Commission on the Future of Sport in Canada, and $15 million to support community sports programs.

However, the absence of additional core funding for National Sports Organizations (NSOs) represents a major oversight that does not address the $125 million shortfall, the cost of which will ultimately be borne by participants. Without enhanced support for National Scout Associations, the infrastructure needed to nurture and sustain Canada's sports system remains underfunded. Since the last increase in funding in 2005, there have been increasing needs and unique requirements of the sport.

The ACA will continue to work with and support the Canadian Olympic Committee and the Canadian Paralympic Committee to engage with the federal government and advocate for these necessary investments to ensure Canadians can rely on a properly resourced sports system.
