Calgary, AB. (March 23, 2024) — Marielle Thompson (Whistler, BC) won the Women's Ski Cross World Cup Finals today in Edre Fjall (Sweden) and with the win, Thompson maintained her season standings to claim the Crystal Globe. This is Thompson's fourth career at the Globe, the others coming in 2012, 2014 and 2017. With her fourth ball, Thompson is now tied for first all-time in cross-global skating victories.
Under overcast skies in Edrie, Thompson led a strong Canadian performance that saw Brittany Phelan (Mont-Tremblant, QLD) share the podium with Thompson in third and Rhys Howden (Chilliwack, BC) take second in the men's race. Howden also finished second in the season standings, narrowly missing out on his third career Crystal Globe.
This is Thompson's sixth win of the season and the 31st of her career, in addition to 67 podium finishes in 136 World Cup appearances. She was also the world champion in 2019 and an Olympic gold medalist in 2014.
“It's really special to win your fourth Globe,” Thompson said. “It is a real honor to compete against these women and it means a lot to finish on top. This season has been tough, and falling in the classification on Thursday was another struggle. We have a great team and they have helped me stay healthy enough to be able to race at the end.” this week”.

Third place for Phelan today, her fourth consecutive podium finish and the twentieth of her career, leaving her third in the season standings. Canada had four women in the top eight today, with Tiana Jairns (Prince George, BC) winning the small final today to place fifth and India Sherritt (Cranbrook, BC) placing seventh. Abby McEwen (Edmonton, AZ) took 12th place today.
For Howden, today's second place is his sixth consecutive podium finish at Edri and gives him 21 podium finishes in 59 World Cup appearances. The other guys in Canada racing today are Jared Schmidt (Ottawa, ON) in 6th and Carson Cook (Edmonton, AB) in 23rd.
“I feel like I did everything I could today and I'm happy with the skiing,” Howden said. “Global winner David Maubjerg (SWE) skated great today and took the globe. Overall, I'm happy with my season. With today's result, Canada wins the Ski Cross Nations Cup presented to the country that tops the Islamic Salvation Front rankings. This is Canada's third consecutive Nations Cup win, and seventh in nine seasons, and Canada has now won 11 of the 17 times the Nations Cup has been presented.
