The US water polo national team's goalkeepers couldn't take it, after Ashley Johnson, the women's national team goalkeeper, considered one of the best in the world at her position, swam on the attack and scored whoever worked against her. Spain on Monday, and Adrian Wennberg also scored in the Greek-American men's match on Thursday.
Men's goalkeeper Emmanuel Zrdevasz was completely caught off guard in the final moments of the first quarter. At the end of the quarter, the Greeks attacked, but Konstantinos Genidonias' shot was easily saved by Wennberg, who looked up and saw that there were still a few seconds left, three seconds to be exact. He thought for a moment, made a big swing, and shot a cross to the right side of the other goal. Zerdevász did not expect to get a full-court shot to the point that he was unable to hit the ball that did not go into the corner perfectly.
Thus, America tied the match with a score of 4-4, but then control went to the Greeks, and the final score was 13-11 for Greece. Interestingly, the US women's national team also lost 13-11 in the goalkeeping match.
The Greeks, who have played three matches, lead their group with 8 points, but Italy can still overtake them in the round. America won only one of their three matches, so they can still be motivated to reach the quarterfinals.
This is the Olympics of big goals, so in addition to two water polo goals, there was also a handball goal scored from the centre.
