According to informed sources of the newspaper US citizens will be evacuated in a “worst case scenario.” According to people familiar with the plans, the emergency scenario is unlikely to materialize at this time, but one said it would be “irresponsible not to prepare for all eventualities.”
American citizens will be evacuated mainly from Israel and Lebanon, and 600,000 people will be rescued from Israel and another 78,000 from Lebanon. Lebanon comes into the picture as a location for the armed extremist Islamic organization Hezbollah, which could attack Israel in the event of an escalation.
“The government is very concerned that the whole situation is out of control.”
One source said.
The US government fears that the Arab world will increasingly turn against Israel because of the bombing of Gaza. In fact, the most extremist organizations may begin open military action against Israel and the American bases operating in the region.
Although the WAPO article does not address this issue, the United States is likely to take preparations for such “contingency scenarios” more seriously due to the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan.
