On June 21, US intelligence informed senior White House and US military officials that Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the Wagner Group, was preparing to rebel against the Russian military leadership, writing: New York times.
The Washington Post also knows that US intelligence may have received information about Prigozhin’s plans as early as mid-June. At the same time, the American command did not have accurate information about the timetable for the plans of the Wagner Group.
Quoting a New York Times source, he noted, “There’s been a lot of anxiety over the past two weeks about what might happen in Russia.” For example, will Russian President Vladimir Putin remain in power, and how potential instability will affect control of Russia’s nuclear arsenal.
Citing intelligence sources, CNN reported that members of Congress had been forewarned of “suspicious” Wagner Group movements and weapons stockpiles near the Russian border.
The story of a coup attempt
On the evening of June 23, Yevgeny Prigozhin accused the Russian Ministry of Defense of bombing the Wagner Group camp, and then announced that his fighters would deal with the Russian chaos. The next morning, the Wagner Group took control of several regions and then headed for Moscow. Prigozhin demanded that Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov be handed over to mercenaries. On the evening of June 24, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko announced that he would hold talks with Prigozhin: the head of the Wagner Group then agreed to stop the movement of mercenaries in the direction of Moscow.
