An English university launches a master’s degree in magic

For the first time in the history of the United Kingdom, a university is launching a master’s program in occult sciences. According to the head of the new major, interest in the subject is growing in the academic world and beyond.

The University of Exeter will launch its Master of Occult Sciences degree in September 2024. Students of the one-year course can delve into the history of magic and sorcery and its effects on society – BBC writes.

In the Department of Magic, experts in history, literature, philosophy, archaeology, sociology, psychology, drama, and religion will teach the role magic has played and is playing in Eastern and Western civilization.

Students will be able to choose from courses such as dragons in Western literature and art, the legend of King Arthur, Islamic thought, paleontology, the theory and practice of archaeology, and the representation of women in the Middle Ages.

Emily Seloff The professor leading the course says that the reason for starting the course is that the growing interest in astrology and magic lies at the heart of society’s most pressing issues. The main themes of the program will be decolonization, exploring alternative epistemologies, feminism, and anti-racism.

The new session begins at the Institute of Arab and Islamic Sciences. According to Professor Silov, the program will give participants the opportunity to review the assumption that the West is the land of rationality, while the East is the land of superstition.

According to the university, with a degree in magic, you will be able to find a job in the fields of education, counseling, guidance, cultural heritage protection, tourism, book publishing, libraries, museums, arts organizations, etc.
