In his invitation letter, Charles Michel wrote that the European Union must act to guarantee humanitarian assistance and avoid exacerbating regional conflict and violations of humanitarian law.
He drew attention to the fact that the conflict could have significant and broader security consequences, which could increase tension between communities living in Europe and fuel extremist views.
He called for the importance of maintaining relations with regional parties, and then said in this regard: “We must never lose sight of the importance of striving to achieve a lasting and sustainable peace based on the two-state solution by strengthening efforts in the peace process in the Middle East.” “.
Finally, Michel drew attention to the risk of people fleeing conflict migrating in large numbers to neighboring countries where large numbers of refugees already reside. The President of the European Council added that if the situation is not handled carefully, there is a risk that these waves of migration will spread to Europe.
The extraordinary EU summit, scheduled to be held via videoconference, will begin on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
