Another reason why we weren’t expecting a new F-Zero game (Nintendo has neglected this IP since the GameCube).
Imamura Takaya left Nintendo last October after three decades, and announced last week that he had published a new manga. It is called Omega 6 and is currently only available in French to purchase. Then, he quickly confirmed that there would be an adaptation of the game from the manga, and that it already had a developer in the person of Japanese studio Happymeal. (I wonder how many McDonald’s fans are that they call themselves that? It’s weird, but at least the name is unique…)
Imamura is the Japanese 4Gamer magazine He also confirmed that the Omega 6 adaptation will be a simple text adventure game, but we’ll be able to control some of the fighting scenes. The story is based on the manga, but it will be original (with new characters). In the manga, we can see the two main characters, Thunder and Kaira. Bounty hunters travel through space to find a planet that could replace Earth. Imamura previously created Fox McCloud and Falco Lombardi in Nintendo’s Starfox IP, Captain Falcon is linked to his name in F-Zero, but so is the crew of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, so Tingle was also his work.
Imamura modeled his characters after his fellow Big N: Fox took inspiration from Miyamoto Shigeru (creator of ex-Mario…), Falco drew inspiration from Watanabe Tsuyoshi (artist), and behind Tingle was composer Kondo Koji. The last Imamura game in 2016, released on the Nintendo Wii U, that could be treated as a serious flop (and hasn’t been called out since…!?), was Star Fox Zero, which Big N worked with Platinum James. (They recently came out with Bayonetta 3.)
Omega 6: The Video Game is coming to Nintendo Switch and will be released sometime in 2023. It will support English, French, and Japanese, so it won’t be a game released only in Japan. I hope he achieves serious success, because the artist knows what he’s doing.
