Nokia’s partnership with the optical device manufacturer ended in 2021, but the official announcement has only just arrived.
In 2017, HMD Global and Zeiss entered into a large-scale partnership, according to which the latter company has supplied optics for Nokia phones in recent years, and also helped develop new sensors and improve image processing algorithms.
HMD Global recently sent a statement to for nokiamob, As described, the long-term partnership has ended, and Zeiss will no longer cooperate in the development of Nokia cameras.
The document revealed that the collaboration actually ended in 2021, so the Nokia XR20 was officially the last device with Zeiss hardware. They didn’t mention the reason for the decision, HMD Global might want to make Nokia mobile phones more cost-effective, but that’s just speculation.
Meanwhile, Zeiss is not idle, they signed a contract with Vivo in 2020, at the same time they said that they will continue to work with Nokia, and now we know that the relationship only lasted another year. We’re curious to see what HMD’s global plan will be with cameras for future Nokia phones.
