Anti-The Game Awards: The 10 worst games of the year according to Metacritic

Baldur’s Gate 3, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Alan Wake 2, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2… Will 2023 be one of the best years in the history of video games? Maybe we shouldn’t be so categorical, but it’s sure to be in our top 5 with strong releases like this and those that will make headlines in the coming days thanks to Game prizes. For many years, we thought of this ceremony as the Oscars of video games, but? But what about the Razzies for worst movies of the year? Well, let’s see which ten video games will be nominated for the most popular list.

The 10 worst games of 2023

One of the most popular games in recent months has been Skull Island: The Rise of Kong, which with an average score of 23 is the worst game of the year, although it must be said that it does not appear in Metacritic’s top 10 list because it is based on only 5 reviews. However, between these reviews and some screenshots and trailers, it’s enough to get the idea that it’s not overrated at all, because there’s nowhere to take it. A license with almost untapped potential that was able to surpass other licenses like it Lord of the Rings: Gollum…on the world.

However, before we get to Daedalic, we have to talk about the game that officially shows up as the worst on Metacritic, which is none other than the very recent Flashback 2. Obviously, it is risky to venture into developing a sequel to the game. 16-bit legend is like Flashback, and you have to be very clear about things, which seems not to have been the case with Microids, a publisher that started out “specializing” in mediocre products.

And after Greyhill Incident, one of many first-person survival horror games that appear throughout the year, some of which must go wrong, by pure force and statistics, we arrive at The Lord of the Rings: Gollum. Granted, we might expect this to happen, and all the game’s delays, combined with the downside it got with each new preview, didn’t bode well. In fact, there was no room for surprises, and the match with Gollum was a disaster. We cannot end without talking about an honorable mention, such as: The fates of the walking deadwith a terrible 29 on Metacritic, despite being based on only 4 reviews.

Beyond that, we find games from which we could not have expected much, but it is worth talking about the games that appear beyond this top ten, because there are games that we can call outright disappointments, and in which we find very strong names. This is the case for the PC version The Last of Us Part One (59), whose optimization problems earned it a poor review. A different case is case Call of duty modern warfare 3 (60), whose mediocre campaign and conservative multiplayer put it in this unusual place for the series.

Another strong name that did not receive the expected critical reception was: Redfall (56), prophesy (64), NBA 2K24 (68) Or Payday 3 (67).
