Apple has received permission to use the 6 GHz frequency band, and important innovations may come – PCW

Augmented reality glasses and CarPlay will be among the big winners, but Meta and Google could be happy, too.

The FCC has officially allowed Apple, Meta, and Google to use the 6 GHz frequency band for their wireless communications devices. Tech world leaders have been pushing for this for years, as technology has become crucial to the use of augmented and virtual reality.

The committee unanimously approved the proposal by a vote of 5:0, which allows this type of use of low-power, short-range devices. Thanks to this, the data transmission speed of new gadgets increases significantly, but the signal is allowed to be transmitted only in a short range so as not to interfere with other devices using this frequency range.

This technology is a very important step in improving connectivity between AR and VR headsets and phones, but car infotainment systems, such as Apple CarPlay, will also benefit from it. Kevin Martin, one of Meta’s vice presidents, welcomed the FCC’s decision, as it could give new impetus to developments.
