Aston Martin Formula 1 Team has signed Formula E world champion Stoffel Vandoorne as test and reserve driver for 2023. Vandoorne will assist Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll at the British team.
Vandoorne, the former McLaren driver, won the 2021/22 FE Championship with Mercedes, of which he is currently part of Formula 1 alongside Nick de Vries.
As predicted by many newspapers, the 30-year-old Vandoorne will take over Aston Martin from F2 champion Felipe Drogovic in the 2023 season, 24 races.
Vandoorne, who became GP2 champion in 2015, competed with McLaren in F1 41 times between 2016 and 2018. In his debut, he replaced Alonso in Bahrain in 2016. His best result to date was seventh in Singapore and at 2017 in Malaysia.
Vandoorne joins former Formula One team with Aston Martin
It’s very exciting to be able to take part in the content competition role in Formula 1 – and I’m very excited to be able to do so with Aston Martin. Vandoorne said in a statement.
“I have watched with great interest how the team has developed and improved from a technical point of view, and I know how amazing it is to achieve success in all areas.
It would be a great job to join Fernand, who I already know from racing Formula 1 cars, and Lance, to help them develop and build the new car. I really look forward to the challenge – and success – of being able to work with the entire team at Silverstone.– said the enthusiast Vandoorne.
