The Algerian city of Oran will be the capital of water sports from 25 June to 6 July. The Sahel will host the 19th Mediterranean Games. More than 6000 athletes from 26 Mediterranean countries will participate in the event. Competitors compete in 244 competitions in 24 sports.
The perfect location
Sailing races are held at the base called “Andalusia”, about thirty kilometers from Oran. This beach with white sand is one of the most popular beaches in the area. It has had this name since the 15th century, since Spanish refugees settled here after the fall of Andalusia.
The organizers of the games did not choose this place by chance. It is a real playing field, said Nazim Addo, president of the Sailing Association of Oran and director of the sailing competition.
new challenges
Series 19 races include some classics like the women’s radial laser and the men’s laser standard. But there are also new and exciting challenges, such as iQFOiL. A surfboard that goes above water and sports fans want it to be included in the Olympic competition in Paris in 2024. In any case, the competition in Oran will be a good test for surfers.
Although this category is almost unknown to Algerian athletes, they promise to do everything in their power to achieve success. They don’t want to embarrass themselves at home. Algeria has the best chance in surfing numbers – at least according to 2019 African champion, Amina El Berishi.
But not only the Andalusian coast is present in the region. From Oran to Madagh, there are many beaches and a remarkable diversity. You can find kilometers of long sandy beaches and huge rock formations. You can try all the water sports in the area and it is also worth going on a trip. No wonder so many people come here in the summer.
One of the main objectives of the regulators is to draw attention to the importance of protecting the environment. So many lectures and volunteer days were organized. The goal is to clean the beaches of Oran from garbage.
