Austria does not oppose the expansion of Schengen air borders to include Romania and Bulgaria

2023. December 11 – 12:02

Regarding air transport, the Austrian government will be more lenient and will not oppose the expansion of aviation borders in the Schengen Area to Romania and Bulgaria, he wrote, referring to Austrian media reports. In Politico.

Importantly, this only applies to air traffic coming to and from these countries, and will not cross the Schengen land border. The Austrian government continues to oppose it, citing illegal immigration.

At the suggestion of Interior Minister Gerhard Karner, air travelers from Romania and Bulgaria must not present their passports within the European Union. However, Bulgaria is expected to allow a greater Frontex (EU border protection) presence on its borders, and both countries should strengthen their border protection.

Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciulacu responded to the news on Facebook by saying that the ice had been broken, and Romanian travelers would finally no longer have to stand in line for hours when traveling within the European Union. Ciolacu threatened the Austrians in September that he would sue them over their veto because they would cause serious financial damage to his country.
