The Belgian studio is also preparing events in their game that many of us will not have in Baldur's Gate 3, and this also shows how much development the game they made for us last year has gone through.
On YouTube, Proxy Gate Tactician showed how extreme the Larian thought is. In the video, in addition to the Netherstones, the Iron Throne dungeons and the Steel Watch Foundry play the main role. The stones are the equivalent of Zelda's Triforce here: you need all three to start the endgame. On the one hand, Larian does not restrict us, so they do not remain static in the inventory, but we can take them out at any time. On the other hand, if we throw one of them into an abyss, for example, then (so that there is no unwinnable situation in the game, which is called soft lock in English) we get a unique overlay over the scene, and as a result we turn into Illithid.
The question in the video is whether there are reactions to losing stones in a more specific way. For example, what happens if they are stuck in a dungeon that you can only go to once in the game? The same goes for the underwater Iron Throne, which must be completed in time before it explodes. Surprisingly, the game doesn’t end immediately, and no soft locking occurs either! Larian has created a specific mini-quest for this case, to find the missing stones! They always appear in the southeastern docks of the Lower City, but the details change depending on your actions.
One is with the Sahuagin by default when the area is raided if we are at the docks. If we kill them, the fishmonger, Old Troutman (who basically has no effect on the game) will sell them for a song. If we finish him off somehow, we will find the stones in a dead fish that washed up on the shore. So there is no way to get there without our will and reach a dead end because of the stones.
But that's not all: Baldur's Gate 3 also offers a unique reaction if you leave the stones on the floor of the Steel Watch Foundry before it explodes. Then a pile of goblins appears south of the factory, and one of them digs stones from under the rubble. We have to eliminate them within five rounds, otherwise the typical unique game will end. This is very dangerous, what attention to detail Larian…
