On the last weekend of August, attention is drawn to Lake Balaton’s current environmental challenges at the Balatorium’s diverse and free-to-access programmes.
As part of the Balatorium x Cultural and Environmental Weekend, the Balaton Research Institute for Lemnology is holding an open day on Friday, August 25th. Experts dealing with the water and environmental research of Lake Balaton present their activities through laboratory tours, discussions and fun programmes. We can find out what native and invasive species live in Lake Balaton, what climate change scenarios are expected and how satellite images of the lake are processed.
The artists’ colony of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts (MKE) in Tihany will also hold an open day on August 25th. The purpose of this event, which is being organized for the first time, is to make it visible and tangible to the residents and visitors of Tihany that Lake Balaton is not only a vacation spot, but also a place for innovative and experimental artistic projects that take environmental aspects into account. account. The organizers also organize a guided tour between the Balaton Limnological Research Institute and the MKE József Somogyi Art Colony, which you can sign up for on the spot.
On August 26 and 27, the free beach in Orvennes welcomes those interested in Lake Balaton with water rides, seaweed spray, board game show, swimming research station, beach library and children’s programmes. During the environmental and cultural weekend at the Balatorium, a very special research station awaits visitors. On a floating raft in the watery area of Orphenes Beach, many devices and tools have been placed to show small and large organisms and natural phenomena that occur around the beach. An exhibition titled “Signs from the Island and Art Sales” will add color to the weekend offerings.
