Google doesn't make much money from its hardware business, but the latest Android features could help generate new revenue through the company's Gemini AI subscription program.

“With Gemini, we’ve completely redesigned the Assistant so you can talk to it like you would another human,” said Samir Samat, head of the Android ecosystem. According to Google, the Assistant is “able to understand your intentions, follow your train of thought, and perform complex tasks.”

“Starting today, you can bring up the Gemini interface on top of the app you’re using to ask questions about what’s on your screen,” they wrote in a blog post introducing the new feature. According to Google, the new feature will be available on hundreds of phone models from dozens of device manufacturers.

Google has had some AI features in Android before, but this is the first year it’s focused on new capabilities powered by a large AI language model installed on devices. The Assistant can also perform tasks using information from Google apps.

“For example, Gemini can help you create a daily workout program based on your personal trainer’s email, or use your Google Drive resume to write a workplace introduction,” the company said in a blog post.

According to the company, users can also ask Gemini to draft an email and “create a cake picture for someone who loves astronomy,” which the assistant can then take and attach to the email. On YouTube, users can also ask Gemini questions about video content.
