Big Play Breakdown | Texans vs. Broncos, Week 13

Oh boy! At this point, I felt my heart beating in my chest…again. I thought we were here again. The Texans defense tied up the Broncos’ receivers on the first two plays of that final set of downs and needed to do it again. Honestly, the secondary needed help from the pass rush and the pass rush needed help from the secondary. They will help each other in this final play. The Broncos came out with 11 personnel, RB Samaje Perine to Wilson’s right and a 3×1 set with a loose group on the left side of the formation. The only thing I didn’t see at the time, but the main man in the group was TE Lucas Kroll. Right before the take, he started gesturing like he wasn’t sure what to do and I don’t think he was alone. In both cases, Kroll ran vertically up the field, ran to the corner and then back to the middle of the field near the back of the end zone. The Texans appear to match routes by “boxing the pack” with their back four in this direction. So, when Krull went to the back of the end zone, S Jimmie Ward was there. What Ward may not have realized is that Wilson was being harassed heavily by DE Jon Greenard. The Bull Rush rushed the Texans pass to LT Garrett Bolles and then immediately pulled off the field. When he did, Wilson had no choice but to stay away from JJ. His rush flustered Wilson, who hastily threw to Kroll in the end zone. Unfortunately for Wilson, Ward was standing directly in front of Kroll. The Texans safety jumped to catch the pass, finishing the play and sending NRG Stadium into hysterics
