The US Congress approved military aid worth about 210 million euros, or more than 83 billion Hungarian forints, to the three Baltic states. The funds will be used to develop the air defense, maritime situational awareness and ground forces of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
This news was announced by Estonian Defense Minister Hannu Pefkur. “US support has greatly helped Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania accelerate the implementation of several military infrastructure projects and develop capabilities,” Estonian Defense Minister Hannu Pefkur said in a statement. “The good news is that support is a little higher than last year.”
The Baltic Security Initiative (BSI), founded in 2020, is an organization through which the US Department of Defense supports the development of military capability and interoperability of the armed forces of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
The Estonian Ministry of Defense announced that the focus of US funding is on developing the air defense, maritime situational awareness and land forces of the Baltic countries, adding that the three countries received a total of $225 million in support until 2023 within the framework. From BSI.
In December, the United States and the Baltic states agreed on a five-year defense cooperation agenda to guide defense and national security cooperation between the two countries through 2028.
