Team Canada improved to a record of two wins and one loss in women’s hockey at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile. On Monday, Canada defeated Mexico 5-0 to finish second in Group B. Defender Carly Johansen of North Vancouver, British Columbia, scored a hat-trick, scoring in the 13th, 33rd and 56th minutes.
Two other Canadians scored for Canada. Sarah McManus of Tsawwassen, British Columbia, scored in the 19th minute, and Audrey Sowers of North Vancouver scored in the 39th minute. It was also a key game for Canadian goaltender Rowan Harris of Ottawa, Ontario, who had a shutout.
Canada will play Argentina in the semifinals on Thursday. This will be a tough matchup for the Canadians, because Argentina looks great so far. They have outscored their opponents after three games by a score of 34-1. Argentina beat Uruguay 8-0, the United States 5-1, and Trinidad and Tobago 21-0. The Argentine star so far is Olympic silver medalist Agustina Gorzelani, who has scored an impressive 10 goals in just three matches. Six of the goals came against Trinidad and Tobago.
The other semi-final will be between the United States and Chile. The winner of the Women’s Olympic Hockey Championship will participate in the 2023 Pan American Games in 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
