Team Canada won its first game at the 2024 Women's Hockey World Championship in Utica, New York. On Thursday at the Adirondack Bank Centre, Canada beat Finland 4-1.
It was a solid game offensively for Canadian defenseman Ella Shelton of Ingersoll, Ont. Shelton, who won gold for Canada in 2022 Winter Olympics in BeijingHe led Canada in scoring with three points (one goal and two assists). Other Canadian scorers are Julia Gosling of London, Ontario, Canadian Olympic gold medalists Brian Jenner of Oakville, Ontario, and Emma Maltese of Burlington, Ontario. Jenner won a gold medal for Canada in 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochiand teamed with Shelton and Maltese to win the gold medal at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.
Shelton, Jenner and Maltese are in the PWHL. Shelton is with New York, Jenner is with Ottawa and Maltese is with Toronto.
Team Canada is one of three undefeated teams so far in Group A of the Women's Hockey World Championship. They were joined by the United States and the Czech Republic. On Wednesday, the United States beat Switzerland and the Czech Republic beat Finland by an identical score of 4-1. Canada will play Switzerland on Friday afternoon.
