Team Canada has reached the quarterfinals of the 2024 Women's World Water Polo Championship. On Saturday, in the opening round of the knockout stage, Canada beat New Zealand 14-12.
Axel Crevier of Montreal, Quebec led the Canadian team with a hat-trick. Four Canadians had a multi-goal match with two goals each. They are Emma Wright of Lindsay, Ontario, Verica Bacock of Toronto, Ontario, Serena Brown of Montreal, Quebec, and Shay Laroche of Calgary, Alberta. The three Canadians who scored one goal were Hayley McKelvey of Delta, British Columbia, Kindred Paul of Spruce Grove, Alberta, and Marilia Mimedes of Montreal.
With this victory, Canada will play Spain in the quarter-finals on Monday. The other quarter-final matches will be held between the United States and Australia, Hungary against the Netherlands, and Italy against Greece.
It should be noted that there is almost a tournament within a tournament here. Also on the line is a place in 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. For Canada to qualify for this summer's Olympics, it must finish against Italy or Hungary. The Hungarians and Italians are still undefeated. They are two of four unbeaten nations so far. The other two countries are the United States and Spain.
