Team Canada presented by Sobeys ends 2023 as the No. 1 ranked nation for the first time since the introduction of the Billie Jean King Cup rankings.
Following its historic win in Seville, first-time world champion Canada has secured the No. 1 spot in the 2023 Billie Jean King Cup End of the Year according to the Gainbridge Nations Rankings for the first time, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) announced on Wednesday.
Sobies’ Team Canada rose five places from its previous No. 6 position after beating Italy 2-0 on Sunday, becoming the eighth nation to occupy the top spot since the rankings were introduced in November 2002 – after Slovakia and France. Russia, Italy, Czech Republic, Australia and Switzerland.
“Having both the men’s and women’s teams sit at the top of the world rankings simultaneously is a remarkable accomplishment and a testament to how far we have come as a tennis nation,” said Michael Downey, CEO of Tennis Canada. “For an individual sport, this is the ultimate reward for the team – justification for all the hard work that has been put into our tennis system over so many years. Seeing Canada take the top spot in our name is an incredibly proud moment. We can’t wait to receive the Billie Jean King Trophy on our shores and look forward to sharing this success with our fans and inspiring more Canadians to pick up a tennis racket.
