The Uitblinker on the Canadian team was 21-year-old Leila Fernandez, who won her singles match against Marketa Vondrousova and then didn’t have the energy to match Gabrielle Dabrowski in the doubles match to get the points needed for the win.
Tsjechië was starting out too much with Barbora Krejcikova’s Tsjechië. Zee defeated Marina Stakosek 6-2, 6-1. Fernandez brought Canada back into the match in two hours during Vondrousova’s win in dry sets: 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. Almost immediately afterward, Fernandez spent two nights in the duplex. Zieg and Dabrowski defeated Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova 7-5, 7-6 (3).
Italian tennis players beat Slovenia 2-0 in the first half. Martina Trevisan and Yasmine Paolini won seven singles matches, but on points. Trevisan defeated Kaja Jovan in two sets (7-6 (6), 6-3), and Paolini defeated Tamara Zidansek in three sets (6-2, 4-6, 6-3). Italy has won the World Cup four times, most recently in 2013.
