SCHAFFHAUSEN, Switzerland – Canadian Brad Gushue defeated Czech Lukas Klima 9-8 in extra end on Saturday at the World Men's Curling Championship.
Gushue, of St. John's, NL, with a stroke and stick to the victory in the round robin opener at IWC Arena.
His team, consisting of Mark Nicholls, AJ Harnden and Jeff Walker, was scheduled to play German Mark Moskatewicz later in the day.
In other early matches, American John Schuster opened the match with a 5-3 victory over Swiss Jannik Schwaler, and Swedish Niklas Edin defeated Dutchman Wouter Gosgens 8-1.
Defending champion Bruce Mowatt of Scotland claimed a 10-3 win over South Korea's Jongduk Park.
The top six teams in the 13-team field will advance to the playoffs at the end of the week. Canada is looking for its first gold medal in the event since Gushue won the 2017 title in Edmonton.
