press release:
Canon has begun development of the EOS R1, the flagship camera of the EOS R system
A new image processing system improves autofocus and image quality
Budapest, Hungary, May 15, 2024 – Canon Inc. has announced… Today the EOS R1, a full-frame mirrorless camera that will be the flagship camera of the EOS R system, is currently in development and will be available in 2024.
The EOS R1 is a professional mirrorless camera that combines the latest Canon technology, combining first-class performance with the outstanding durability and high reliability required of top-of-the-line models. This camera improves still image and video quality (compared to the EOS R3) and meets the high demands of professionals working at the forefront of a wide range of fields, such as sports, newscasting and video production.
This camera uses the newly developed DIGIC Accelerator image processing processor in addition to the existing DIGIC X processor. The new image processing system, consisting of these processors and the new CMOS sensor, enables extremely fast processing of large amounts of data and provides unprecedented improvements in autofocus (AF) and other functions.
By combining a new image processing system with deep learning technology, Canon has achieved high speed and high accuracy in target recognition. For example, goal tracking accuracy has been improved, so that in team sporting events where multiple goals intersect with each other, the goal can be tracked continuously, even if another player passes directly in front of it. In addition, the Action Priority AF function detects subject movement by analyzing the state of the subject very quickly. In moments when it is difficult to predict what will happen during a sports match, this function automatically identifies the player performing a certain action, such as kicking the ball, as the main target and instantly moves the AF frame so that it helps you capture the decisive moments of the match.
The combination of a new image processing system and deep learning technology helps improve image quality. Developed and optimized as part of software previously designed for PCs, Canon has built image noise reduction into the camera to further improve image quality and contribute to user creativity.
Canon is currently testing this camera in real-world conditions and will support the capture of important and impressive moments at future international sporting events.
In the future, Canon will continue to expand the product line of EOS R system cameras and RF lenses, thus continuing to meet user needs and contribute to the development of photo and video culture.
