The singer appeared as a surprise guest at the City of Hope gala in Los Angeles to present the Spirit of Life Award to Jay Marciano, president and CEO of AEG Presents. Check out your photos from the event in this scrollable Instagram post!

“It was an honor to share the stage with guest of honor Jay Marciano and my dear friend Elton John for a truly unforgettable evening. City of Hope is a great organization for cancer research, and being a part of such an inspiring evening touched me deeply,” Celine Dion wrote in her post: “I am very grateful to be invited. Together we can change things.”

What disease does Celine Dion suffer from?

In the documentary “I Am Celine Dion,” Celine Dion spoke at length about the serious neurological disease that threatened her career, Stiff Person Syndrome.

The disease is characterized by muscle stiffness, increased sensitivity to stimuli such as sound and light, and emotional stress, which can cause muscle spasms. The condition usually begins with muscle stiffness in the middle of the body, trunk and abdomen, before leading to stiffness and spasms in the legs and other muscles.

“It's like someone is constantly choking you. It's like someone is pressing on your throat or your pharynx. It's like you're speaking, but you can't get any higher or deeper. You're just getting spasms. It started in your throat and then I thought “No, it's okay, everything will be fine,” Celine Dion said, “but this symptom may be in the abdomen, or it may be in the spine, or it may be in the ribs.” He prepares for her return with the help of a special new treatment, and has previously described her symptoms. Despite the illness, he does not want to give up singing forever.
