Last week, 1,256 new infections were identified in Romania, an increase of 82 percent compared to the previous week. A third of the patients did not have a first-time Covid infection. In the statement, five deaths are attributed to Covid, but all the victims also had other diseases. Three of them were vaccinated against the coronavirus.
The progress of the coronavirus is being felt primarily in the wards of epidemic hospitals, where more and more patients with respiratory symptoms have arrived in recent weeks.
– Chief physician Simin Aysel Florescu, director of the Victor Babes Epidemiological Hospital in Bucharest, who was interviewed by Hotnews, explained.
The chief doctor said these are usually patients who also suffer from chronic diseases or the elderly who seek help from doctors due to moderate or even severe forms of the disease and need hospital treatment.
He added: The proportion of young people among patients diagnosed with the coronavirus is relatively low, and in their case the risks are also lower and they usually only need symptomatic treatment. According to his assumption, there are many infected people who have not been officially diagnosed with Covid, because the disease only appears as a cold and infected people do not go to the doctor.
According to the hospital director, the number of coronavirus cases has been rising across Europe in recent weeks, which could be attributed to the new subvariant of the Omicron strain, called JN1.
The specialist added: Like previous subvariants of Omicron, JN1 only causes an increase in the number of cases, but there is no indication that the course of the disease is more severe compared to previous variants.
“It can easily be confused with the flu: it usually only causes coughing, muscle pain and a feeling of being unwell for a day or two. However, in more severe cases, respiratory failure and pneumonia can also occur,” the chief doctor explained. Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, more than 3.5 million cases of SARS-CoV-2 have been registered in Romania, and nearly 69,000 people infected with the coronavirus have died.
