St. Catharines, Ontario, will host the 2024 Canadian Mixed Curling Championships

The Canadian Mixed Curling Championship returns to Ontario for the first time in eight years. The 2024 Canadian Mixed Championship will be in St. Catharines, Ontario, it was announced today by Curling Canada.

Fourteen provincial and territorial mixed teams will compete at the St. Catharines Golf and Curling Club from November 3-9, 2024, for a chance to represent Canada at the 2025 World Mixed Curling Championship (dates and location to be determined by the World Curling Federation). .

“The return of the Canadian Mixed Curling Championships to Ontario is long overdue. There is an excellent host committee in St. Louis,” said Danny Lamoureux, interim CEO of Curling Canada. Catharines Golf & Country Club, and we know that all of the athletes competing for the Canadian Championship are going to have a great time next year.”

The 2024 mixed national event marks the first time in Ontario since 2016 when Team Alberta’s Mick Lismore captured gold at Weston Golf & Country Club in Toronto.

“We are thrilled to welcome the 2024 Canadian Mixed Curling Championships to St. Catharines this November,” said St. Catharines Mayor Matt Sisko. “St. Catharines Golf & Country Club will be the perfect location to host this event and will be a great way to celebrate the club’s 125th anniversary as part of our community’s sporting landscape. We look forward to welcoming athletes, coaches, volunteers and spectators from across Canada to our beautiful city for an exciting week of competition.” !

St. Catharines is no stranger to hosting premier national curling events. Most recently, the city hosted the 2017 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, when Ontario’s Rachel Homan won the Canadian women’s title in front of a home-provincial crowd at the Meridian Centre.

“St. Catharines Golf & Country Club has a rich history of hosting Canada’s best curlers. Since 1995, we have been home to many important curling events. Our club will celebrate its 125th anniversary in 2024, and we are very proud to commemorate this year “We look forward to welcoming all competitors, coaches and spectators as we add an important chapter to the great sport of curling at St. Catharines Golf and Country Club,” said Brent Beam, President of St. Catharines Golf and Country Club.

St. Catharines Golf and Country Club has hosted two Canadian Under-21 Championships: in 2007, won by Alberta’s Charlie Thomas and Newfoundland and Labrador’s Stacey Curtis (n. Devereaux), and in 2001, won by Newfoundland and Labrador’s Team Brad. Gushue and Susan Gaudet from Prince Edward Island.

“Our club has many members with experience organizing events. These volunteers are already working hard to ensure we achieve our goal of providing the best possible experience for all competitors and attendees at the 2024 Canadian Mixed Curling Championships,” said Host Committee Chair Michelle Scott. “We are proud of our hosting history and are confident that we will organize a very successful event in our 125th year.”

The 2024 Canadian Mixed Curling Championships marks the 12th time that mixed has been held within the boundaries of the CurlON member association. In addition to the event in Toronto in 2016, past events include 1964 in Toronto (won by Team Manitoba Ernie Bushey), 1965 in Toronto (Team Alberta Lee Green), 1969 in Kitchener (Team Alberta Don Anderson), 1975 in Kitchener (Team Alberta Team Les Rowland), 1985 in Toronto (Team British Columbia Steve Skillings), 1995 in Point Edward (Team Nova Scotia Steve Ogden), 1998 in Owen Sound (Team Nova Scotia Steve Ogden), 2007 in Kitchener (Team New Brunswick Terry Odisho) , 2010 in Burlington (Mark Dacey’s team in Nova Scotia) and 2014 in Ottawa (Darren Molding’s team in Alberta).

“The 2024 Canadian Mixed Curling Championships in St. Catharines will strike the perfect balance between the spirited competition inside the rink and all the beauty that can be explored outside. “We look forward to welcoming all of Canada’s best co-ed curling teams to the Niagara Region next year,” said Matt Allen, CurlON CEO.

Four Canadian mixed championships have been won by teams from Ontario. Mike Anderson’s team is the last home county unit to win the title at the 2018 event in Swan River, Man. Previous winners from Ontario are Dave Van Dyne’s team in 1986, John Epping’s team in 2006, and Corey Hegestad’s team in 2013.

Saskatchewan and Alberta are tied for the most mixed titles, with 11 each.

The 2023 event concluded in Swift Current, Sask., earlier this month. Saskatchewan’s Sean Mitchem of Swift Current won the Canadian Championship at his home club. The team, which includes Scottish Olympian Kellie Schaefer, will represent Canada at the 2024 World Mixed Curling Championships in Aberdeen, Scotland, from October 12-19, 2024.
