Not everyone thinks that CD Projekt’s cyber-RPG deserves to win, and this is reflected in the reviews.
CD Projekt’s turbulent RPG Cyberpunk 2077 won the Labor of Love category at the Steam Awards 2022, awarded to a game that “is still getting new content after all these years.” However, in the aftermath of the victory, it became apparent that not everyone felt they had made the right decision.
Steam Award Winners are chosen by vote, which means they are chosen by a majority of users over the other contenders in the category: Dota 2, Project Zomboid, No Man’s Sky, and Deep Rock Galactic. But somehow, Steam’s user rating system means that the Steam Awards never end. Indeed, in the aftermath of Labor of Love’s victory, another wave of negative user comments appeared on Steam, many of whom expressed their feeling that it was the popularity of the Netflix series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, rather than the game itself, that pushed it higher.
“Labour of love is my ass, and the game is where it should have been. It only became a love laboratory because of bad guys and stupid anime.”
“It won Love Test because of this series and nothing else. This game has literally 0 content added in 2 years than any other candidate. The game is still rubbish and it will be until the company gets their act together.”
“It’s amazing how a decent animated adaptation can fool so many people that the source material deserves to be forgiven, let alone given a ‘Labor of Love’ award.”
“Cyberpunk Edgerunners didn’t make it a good game.”
(Cyberpunk 2077 Steam reviews)
It is not bombardment in the classic sense. While there’s certainly been a spike in negative reviews since the Steam Awards winners were announced – 193 in total so far – it seems only a handful of fans have expressed frustration with the way things are now, rather than making a concerted effort to cause grief. for some reason. And on the same two days, many positive reviews were written: a total of 836.
In fact, that percentage isn’t that different from when Cyberpunk 2077 first released in December 2020, when Cyberpunk 2077 was at its worst: over 63,000 negative reviews, which is quite a wild number, but still no more than a quarter to 227,000. A positive review was published in the same period.
Despite its turbulent history, Cyberpunk 2077 has only been “officially” bombarded with criticism on Steam once. This happened in March 2022, when thousands of negative user reviews surfaced after CD Projekt stopped selling its products in Russia and Belarus in protest of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. As noted by The Gamer, the amount of negative reviews was enough to drop the game’s “fresh” rating to “mixed”, although Valve later designated these reviews as off-topic and thus excluded them from the overall rating.
However, this is still included.
