According to data from the Road Safety Council of the Council of Europe, 76 people died on the roads in Serbia last year, and thus the country ranks third in Europe in terms of the number of traffic deaths per million inhabitants.
At the top of the list is Bulgaria, where the number of deaths reached 82 per million people, while 81 people lost their lives in traffic accidents in Romania.
Although Serbia ranks third on the list, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the number of fatal accidents in the country has decreased over the past decade. Deyan Savic, head of the Traffic Police Directorate, said that the Ministry of Interior has been working to reduce the number of accidents for years, and there is progress, but they also realize that it is not enough.
Head of the Traffic Police Directorate, Slavisa Matic, said that according to police data, there are six factors that significantly influence the frequency of traffic accidents:
- Speed inappropriate for traffic and road conditions (45 percent),
- The driver evaluates the situation poorly (17 percent),
- The driver loses control of the car (14%),
- Driving under the influence of alcohol (11 percent),
- Lack of experience (9 percent)
- Failure to give the right of way (6 percent).
