The developers want to revamp the real-time strategy game originally published in 2002 for a much better experience than what we saw in the Age of Empires Definitive Edition versions.
In the video embedded below, we can see the modern version of Age of Mythology in action for the first time (although it was already announced at the end of 2022). Mythical monsters (jellyfish, flying pegasus, titan Cerberus) also appear, and we can't complain about their appearance at all. The aim is clearly for the remake to be a real step up from the original released 22 years ago, as the old sound effects remain, and the animation appears with a slight touch up.
PCGamer asked Ernest Yuen, producer of Age of Mythology: Retold. This guy has been at Microsoft for nearly 25 years: his first job was as a quality control position on the first Age of Empires, so there's a strong sense that he's there for the franchise (Age of Mythology is a spinoff!): “Age of Mythology: Retelling It's way beyond what we normally do with Definitive Edition games. We want to build the game in your head. We start by adding ray tracing, raising the population cap, [és] We add an engine to handle special effects.
What we do at Retold is we make the use of the Decks skill user controllable, and you can use it whenever you want. Changing God Power to a cooldown is great for both eSports and game viewing. This anticipation makes the game more fun. these [exploit] Things need to be updated, and if we don't patch and fix them, the game won't be viable as an eSports game, and it's important to fix these things so our community can play the tournaments they love. “With all the changes we have made, we will not break this promise,” Yuen said.
Age of Mythology: Retold is coming to PC and Xbox Series later this year. It uses a more advanced version of the Age of Empires 3 Definitive Edition engine.
