You can buy watermelons almost anywhere during the summer, from supermarkets to roadside vendors to markets. But it can be a big disappointment if you take home a huge, beautiful and healthy watermelon – but when you cut it, it tastes like water, or maybe mushy. It is difficult to choose the “real” variety from the seller, since at first glance all watermelons look the same. The surest way is not to knock, you can decide which watermelon is the most delicious among many in a completely different way! We show you what to pay attention to when shopping.
The spot reveals itself
yellow spot on watermelon It shows where the fruit was touching the ground – it’s yellow because the sun’s light didn’t reach it. If this spot has a good dark color, then this means that the fruit has been in the sun for a long time, i.e. it was not picked immaturely.
The smell is important
Once you’ve picked a watermelon, lift it slightly away from the rest and smell it. If it has such a strong, sweet, intense watermelon aroma that you can almost taste it in your mouth, you’re holding a ripe piece. However, be warned that if this smell is too strong, your chosen melon may be overripe!
Size does matter
Many people think that the larger the watermelon, the more likely it will taste like water, but this is not the case, the size does not matter at all in terms of sweetness! Instead, watch the watermelon peel. In the case of the striped varieties, the shade of the stripes contrasts sharply with the mature specimens, and the color of the green varieties is dark green. It is true of both types that the off type is fine; Watermelons with a shiny skin are usually unripe.
A twisted torso is not a good sign
It reveals the watermelon stalk not only to buyers, but also to producers, as its condition shows whether the fruit can be harvested. If you pick a watermelon too early, before it’s fully ripe, the stem won’t separate well and you’ll have to twist it—but those early-picked pieces probably aren’t very sweet. If you buy a watermelon and find one with a crooked stem, don’t buy it.
