The agreement, which was signed five months after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, was due to expire on Monday, and Putin has repeatedly threatened not to renew it because the agreement would negatively affect Russian exports.

“We are preparing to host Putin in August and agree to extend the grain corridor in the Black Sea,” Erdogan told reporters.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres sent a letter to Putin this week urging her to extend the agreement. In it, he also confirmed that he supports removing obstacles to Russian fertilizer exports – Moscow has complained about this several times.

Erdogan expressed his hope that “with this message we will ensure the expansion of the grain corridor.”

On Thursday, Putin warned that “no one” of Moscow’s conditions had been met, so the deal could not work.

“I would like to emphasize that nothing happened, absolutely nothing. It’s all one-sided,” Putin said in a television interview, then added: “We’ll think about what to do, we have a few more days.”

The agreement, which the Turkish president helped broker, allowed Ukraine to ship more than 32 million tons of grain across the Black Sea along with Russian warships stationed there.

Most of the grains help feed the populations of Africa, the Middle East and other developing countries. If exports are banned again, food prices could jump higher than they are now.
