The US Department of Homeland Security said Tuesday afternoon that Croatia’s inclusion in the Visa Waiver Program may be decided by Secretary of State Alejandro Mallorcas, following a joint decision with Secretary of State Anthony Blinken. According to the announcement, by December 1 at the latest, ESTA will already allow Croatian citizens to apply for a permit to enter the United States – for business or tourism – without a visa for up to 90 days.

In order for a country to be included in the program, it must, among other things, take credible measures against terrorism, have a reliable law enforcement system, protect borders and other institutional systems that ensure security. Another requirement is that the nonimmigrant visa application rejection rate from there must be less than 3 percent. This last condition has been fulfilled by Croatia.

Hungary is also a member of the VWP.
