Civilians from Bbulna wrote an open letter to the mayor regarding the planned Chinese cathode plant for the neighboring Ács, close to them. They would like the mayor of Paulna, Clara Horvath, to take a position on the investment and answer a series of questions.

The people of Babelna ask their mayor for a statement regarding the Chinese cathode factory to be built on the border of neighboring Ács. They expect Clara Horvath, who was elected as an independent in 2019, but has also been politicized as a Member of Parliament with MSZP colours, to take a stand on this issue before the public forum in cs scheduled for the end of August on the cathode plant.

Learning from the operation of other Chinese-owned, Chinese-operated and Chinese-controlled factories, residents have concerns

– they wrote in an open letter sent to hvg.hu, reminding us of the noodle factory of the former Hong Kong Dragon Food restaurant, started in 2012, and whose “remains are still a stain on the settlement.”

The announcement two weeks ago of a HUF 520 billion plant planned by China’s Huayou Cobalt on the southern edge of the Ács border in Komárom-Esztergom county, which will soon produce cathodes for electric vehicle batteries, caused quite a stir. Ács too, as most of the local Pele Council members resigned, because they felt that, without the knowledge of him and the people of the countries they represented, they had decided to invest over their heads.

The Babel epistle writers want to know how

  • How much water will the new plant need,
  • What is the cleaning technique used in the case of sewage and where is it discharged,
  • what effect does water withdrawal have on the groundwater of the station, what effect does this have on the drilled wells and thermal waters – they pointed to the thermal spa, which opened in 2020, initially works with more or less interruptions and costs the city more than HUF 2.5 billion in total;
  • Does the city plan to seek an opinion from an independent expert,
  • how the prevailing north-northwest wind direction – where the factory area is located away from the city – will affect the air in Bubulna;
  • what kind of air pollution, noise pollution and increase in vehicular traffic can be expected;
  • where the workforce will come from, whether and where guest workers will come from;
  • How to prepare for a potential emergency, and
  • How do you tell the public about all this?

A collection of signatures against the settlement’s cathode plant is also underway. Local organizer and civic activist Robert Painter, who sent the open letter, told hvg.hu that 95 percent of Bubulna residents oppose the investment.
