The number of children born in the first month of 2024 decreased by nine hundred compared to the previous year. The number of deaths also decreased in January, and many more people married than at the beginning of 2023.

The Central Statistical Office announced that 6,650 children were born in Hungary in January this year, 902 fewer than in the first month of 2023. 2023 saw a historic decline in the number of births, but January was the only month to make the number higher than The average for many years – and now, in comparison, there has been a very large decline of 12%.

However, the mortality side of the demographic statistics improved: 11,723 people died, 134 fewer than in January of last year.

In the past 12 months, between February last year and January this year, 84,298 children were born and 127,066 died. This means that the number of births decreased by 5,111 and the number of deaths by 8,009 compared to the previous year.

At this time, KSH used to publish the fertility rate, which shows how many children an average woman will have during her lifetime, but this has been omitted from the current data release.

In January this year, 1,678 marriages took place, representing a significant increase of 37 percent compared to January 2023, but the number of new marriages still fell by 20 percent in the past 12 months.
